My own( Peter Dreyer`s)grandfather J. H. T. (Joe) Dreyer b3c2d1e2f4g1h1 was manager of the White House Hotel on Strand Street in Cape Town, yet when I lived there, I never even bothered to go inside. What an idiot I must have been! There's a great anecodote about Joe arranging for all the hotel bars to close when the next Australian troop ship docked during World War I (because the Australians regularly wrecked them). When the troops came ashore, they were surprised to find no bars open, but since they were used to weird licensing laws back in Oz, they assumed it was just something like that. Then they came across an old drunk who explained that there was this man named Joe Dreyer who had organized it . . . Unfortunate consequences followed for the White House and especially its barmaids (barmaids?? that's what I remember). Joe himself apparently escaped by locking himself in the lavatories, or something like that. The only record of this now seems to be in my memory, although I suppose a search of the Cape Times or Argus files of that era might turn something up.
It was Joe who started the process of anglicizing our branch of the family. When his father was killed in that threshing machine accident, he found himself with a stepfather he didn't get on with, ran off to Cape Town, and got a job in a hotel, it seems
