Hy gaan aan SACS in Kaapstad skool, waarna hy sy studie aan die Normaalkollege in Kaapstad voortsit.Hy behaal sy BA-graad met onderskeiding in dierkunde aan die South African College, waarna hy met ‘n Koningin Victoria-studiebeurs aan die Universiteit van Halle in Duitsland gaan studeer en die grade MA en PhD (summa cum laude) behaal. Hierna is hy vir verder studie na Napels en die Cornell-universiteit in Ithaca New York. In 1912 word hy as lector in dierkunde en geologie aangestel aan die Grey-universiteitskollege (nou die Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat) en word in 1917 bevorder tot hoogleraar, ‘n posisie wat hy vir 33 jaar beklee tot sy aftrede in 1950. Hy het ook verskeie kere as voorsitter van die beheerraad van die Nasionale Museum in Bloemfontein opgetree. Hy het internasionale bekendheid verwerf vir sy paleontologiese, argeologiese en antropologiese werk in die omgewings van Matjesrivier, Florisbad en langs die Oranjerivier. In 1932 lewer sy opgrawings die opspraakwekkende 40 000 jaar oue prehistoriese mensfossiel, die Florisbadskedel op, wat in 1984 op uitnodiging van die American Museum of Natural History saam met ander wereldbekende fossiele in New York uitgestal is. Hy was getroud met Cornelia Johanna GREEFF en hulle het ‘n seun en drie dogters gehad.
