James was a veteran of the Spanish American War and the Phillipine's Insurrection and World War I. He had talent for handling machinery and demonstrated many of the early day crawler tractors at that time known as the Holt Caterpillar Tractor. He operated a tank in WWI. While employed by the Holt Company, he was sent to Russia for several months to teach repair and operation of the crawler tractors. He also op[erated the first Caterpillar Tractor which displaced the 20 Mule Teams that hauled Borax from Death Valley, Californis.
