Fatal fall Secaucus High School student dies in tragic accident
A Secaucus teenager fell to her death on June 13 in an apparent accident, officials said.
Danielle Venhorst, 17, of Sixth Street, reportedly dropped her cell phone at around 8 p.m. near the edge of a cliff located along State Highway 139 in Jersey City, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. When she reached to retrieve it, Venhorst lost her balance and fell over 50 feet into an adjacent ravine near St. Paul's Avenue. She landed on the railroad tracks below.
Sergeant Edgar Martinez of the Jersey City Police Department stated that the only witness was Erick Vega, a male friend who was with her at the time. After the fall Vega yelled down to Venhorst, but he heard no response. He then called 911. When fire fighters and police arrived they climbed down the cliff where they found Venhorst's body.
Venhorst died in an area known to longtime Jersey City residents as the Bergen Arches, an area that was once a major conduit for rail lines but is now mostly overgrown. Authorities claim that teenagers now often use the area as place to hang out.
A preliminary autopsy report stated that Venhorst died of blunt force trauma to the body consistent with the fall.
Although the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad is investigating Venhorst's death, Prosecutor DeFazio believes that the preliminary investigation indicates that it was an accidental fall. The prosecutor's office questioned Vega, a student at Hudson Community College, but has since concluded that the fall was an accident and no charges are expected to be filed.
"It's very sad," DeFazio said. "This is an extraordinary incident, and it's a horrible thing. It's a wooded area despite the fact that it's in the middle of the city and it's somewhat secluded. I really don't think that there was a way that it could have been prevented. It's just a tragic accident."
Officials at Secaucus High School said that they will provide counseling for students.
However, the healing has already begun on the Internet. Venhorst had a page on MySpace.com, a popular website where people often post photos, blogs, and send messages. Her page has turned into an impromptu memorial, with many people taking the opportunity to electronically say good-bye.
One well-wisher told Danielle "You're one of a kind."
Another spoke for the community at large.
"I hope you find peace and happiness where you are. R.I.P. sweetheart."
