Dear Dan,
I am glad to have been of help.
The letters of freedom are filed in the National Archive in Paramaribo, Surinam.
To obtain a copy you will have to visit the National Archive. You cannot order a copy by email.
The letter of freedom of Philippus Uitdam (Government Resolution 12 July 1851) was given as an appendix when Philippus got married on 15 February 1882.
(source: marriage certificate, document nr. 5)
When you visit Suriname you can look for the marriage certificate and make a copy of the letter
of freedom.
When a former slave got married, he or she always had to hand over the letter of freedom to the
registrar.
I have also noticed the discrepancy in the name of Gompert Philip Heilbron.
I assume that Mordechai Gompert Heilbron and Gompert Philip Heilbron are the same person.
In all the documents that I wrote down about Gomperts Philip Heilbron, the following is always stated: "Gomperts Heilbron, calling himself and writing his name as Gomperts Philip Heilbron".
Probably Gompert Philip did not like the first name Mordechai.
When I visit the National Archive in the Hague I will look for the birth registers of the Jewisch synagogue to check the name Mordechai.
I think I have discovered a mistake in the death certificate (24 May 1894, folio 435) of Gompert
Philip Heilbron.
The registrar is Theodorus Hugo Monsanto, 54 years old, living in the Weidestraat.
The certificate states the following:
"Deceased on thursday 24 May 1894 in the Waterkant A-139, Gomperts Heilbron, calling himself and writing his name as Gomperts Philip Heilbron, widower of Sally Olivieira, 76 years and 11 months old, born in Paramaribo, son of Gomperts Philip Heilbron and of Sara Meijer Arons, both deceased".
The mistake is that Gompert Philip Heilbron was NOT married to Sally Olivieira.
I checked the District Register Paramaribo of 1846 and found that Sally Olivieira was married to
Meijer Gompert Heilbron, an older brother of Gompert Philip Heilbron.
Circumstantial evidence is the following.
An advertisement is placed in the newspaper of 3 June 1894 (De West-Indiër, sunday 3 June 1894): we express our sincere gratitude to those who expressed their sympathy upon the death of our father G.P. Heilbron. Four names are mentioned in the advertisement:
C.M. Heilbron, Ph. Heilbron, C.G. Heilbron and C.P. Salomons-Heilbron.
It is NOT mentioned in the advertisement: widower of Sally Olivieira.
In case he had been married to Sally Olivieira it would certainly have been mentioned.
I do not have any records about a C.M. Heilbron. Probably another child ?
I forgot to mention two things.
Gompert Philip Heilbron his profession was: merchant.
The profession of Philippus Heilbron was also: merchant.
Jan Houthakker.
