William 'Bill' Buitenhuys, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed surrounded by his family on June 30, 2011 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. Bill was born on November 30, 1930 in Melrose, MA and raised in Everett, MA. He developed an early love for baseball which lasted throughout his lifetime. At Everett High School he was a Boston Globe All-Scholastic in 1947 and 1948 as pitcher, third baseman, and outfielder. He served in the US Navy as a personnel clerk aboard the USS Chewaucan (AOG-50) which was part of the initial deployment of the US 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean during the Korean war. During his service he received the Navy Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. After serving his country for four years, he married Mary Juliano in 1958. Bill spent his career as an offset printer working for many years at the House of Offset in Boston. After moving to Wakefield, MA to raise his family, Bill was a coach for 12 years in the Babe Ruth League, an umpire for the Intercity League, and in 1976, founded the Wakefield Twi-League 18+ baseball program. After 'retiring' to E. Falmouth, MA, he opened G.H. Ruth and Sons baseball card shop. He was a youth mentor for 5 years as part of the Falmouth Volunteer in Public Schools program. He loved digging for quahogs, playing cards with friends, watching his grandsons sporting events, hiding presents all over the house, and watching the Sox. Bill will be remembered as a practical joker with a dry sense of humor and immense love for his family. Nothing made him happier than taking his family for car rides to nowhere, as long as nowhere included a fried seafood platter or a bowl of frozen-pudding ice cream.
He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Marjorie (Berry) Buitenhuys and by his younger sister, Marjorie Boyages. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lillian Buitenhuys, Chandler AZ; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and David McCarthy, Walpole MA; and grandsons Bradley, Daniel, Sean, and William.
