Services Held July 15 In Cong'l. Church
A projected week end trip and outing at Cedar Falls ended in tragedy early Sunday morning in a one-car accident on a Hancock county blacktop road with the death of Michael Allan Heitland, 21 of Buffalo Center. Investigating officer IowaHighway Patrolman Maynard Holland indicated the auto, a 1962 Mercury driven by Patrick Orthel, 20, also of Buffalo Center, was traveling west at the time of the crash. The car was termed a total wreck.
The ear, out of control, went off the road striking a farm driveway and flipped end over end, coming to a stop in the northslde ditch. It Is surmised that death came to Michael Instantly In the crash. Orthel was taken' to Mercy HospitalIn Mason City and after being treated for facial and shoulder lacerations was hospitalized. He was dismissed Monday.
Earlier on Saturday, the two young men had left Buffalo Center shortly after noon bound for Cedar Falls and a week end outing with Mike Orthel, brother of Pat, Upon arriving there, it was discovered that Mike's work schedule had beenchanged and their plans could not be implemented. They left Cedar Falls around 10:00 p.m. for home and the accident occur red near Miller, a small hamlet in Hancock county.
Patrolman Holland indicated speed was not a factor in the crash but that the driver apparently fell asleep with the car traveling along the road shoulder

before going into the ditch and hitting the embankment. Charges are pending against the driver.
Michael Allan Heitland was born March 20, 1948 in Buffalo Center to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Heitland. He passed away July 13, 1969 at the age of 21 years, 3 months and 23 days. Services were held Tuesday in the First Congregational Churchwith Winter Funeral Service in charge of arrangements and Rev. Wm. Clevenger officiating.
Burial was in Graceland Cemetery with David Heitland, Paul Heitland, Terry Heitland, Gary Honken, Jerry Alvey and Mark Smith as pallbearers.
Michael is survived by his parents; two brothers, Timothy and Jefferey; a sister, Jorjia, all at home; two grandparents, Mrs George Heitland and Mr. John Smith, also of Buffalo Center, and many other relatives and a wide circle offriends. Michael vould have been a college senior this fall." <>
