Funeral services for George 'Joe' R. Heitland, Jr., 87, were held Wednesday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. Pastor William Peake and Pastor Paul Haugen officiated. Organist was Kathi Nelson.Special music was provided by Judy Junkermeier. The congregation also sang. Casketbearers were Travis Dontje, Tim Heidecker, Larry Mountain, Carey Melz, Scott Heitland, Cdr. Rick Mountain, Brandon Melz and Randy Melz. Interment was inGraceland Cemetery at Buffalo Center. Joe passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
George (Joe) Richard Heitalnd, Jr., son of George Sr. and Harmka (Pasteur) Heitland was born September 4, 1916 at Thompson. He grew up and attended school in the Thompson area. On October 30, 1934, Joe was united in marriage to RuthElaine Fisher at Mason City. The couple made their home in Buffalo Center, where they raised their family and lived in the same house for 50 years.
Joe first worked for Harry Honken and then for his brother, Edward Heitland in the livestock business. He later worked for Hardy Jordahl in the machinery business where he became very fond of the Allis Chalmers tractor. His last workingyears he drove a gas truck for Coop Oil until he retired.
For enjoyment, Joe always liked to do a little farming, and he collected Allis Chalmers tractors. He kept very busy by walking and golfing every day he could until his fall in March of 2002. Joe entered the Timely Mission Nursing Homein May of 2002.
Joe is survived by his children: Janell Heidecker and her husband, Ivan of Lakota, Diane Mountain and her husband, Bill, of Vernon Center, Minnesota; Connie Melz and her husband, Harlan, of Lakota; Terry Heitland of Long Lake, Minnesota;Patricia Dontje and her husband, Gary, of Garner, a daughter-in-law, Adelia Heitland, of Des Moines; twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, dorothy Heitland of Buffalo Centerand Alberta Heitland of Oelwein; brother-in-law, Lawrence Leibrand, of Buffalo Center; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, on February 17, 2004; two sons, Dennis and Greg Heitland;grandson, Troy Heidecker; six brothers: Edward, Norman, Alfred, Forest, Harold and Huxley Heitland; four sisters: Margaret Rafferty, Grace Smith, Esther Alvey and Mildred Leibrand."
