Funeral services for James E. Heitland, 65, of 114 6th Street NW, Mason City, who died Wednesday, July 10, 1996 at the Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit in Mason City, were held Saturday, July 13, 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church inMason City with Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center. Major Erickson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
James E. Heitland was born December 28, 1930 in Buffalo Center to Edward and Marian Heitland. He attended and graduated from Buffalo Center High School, attended Waldorf College in Forest City, and graduated from Iowa State TeachersCollege (now the University of Northern Iowa) with double masters in secondary guidance and elementry guidance.
He served his country for two years in the US Army during the Korean conflict.
James was married to Marilyn Halvorson June 4, 1951 in Forest City.
James worked as a guidance counselor and coach in several school systems, including Audubon, Mason City, Anamosa (12 years), Rockwell-Swaledale and Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock. He lived in Rudd for eight years before moving to Mason Cityin March of 1995. He enjoyed all types of sports, coaching and spending time with his family.
He was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Mason City, having served as moderator of the congregation.
James is survived by one daughter, Lise Engelbart of Anamosa; one son, John Heitland and his wife, Marybeth, of Madison, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, two brothers, Paul Heitland and his wife, Jean, and David Heitland, all of LakeMills; two sisters, Shirley Higbee and her husband, Jerry, of Lake Mills and Donna Gilbertson and her husband, Al, of Forest City, many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Marilyn, in March of 1995."
