Titonka - Funeral Service for Evert John Sleper, 87, was conducted by Pastor Robin L. Thomas at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 4, in the United Methodist Church at Titonka. Burial was in the Buffalo Township Cemetery with theGarry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral home in Titonka in charge of Arrangements.
Casket bearers for their grandfather were Jonathan Chambers, Scott Smidt, Mike Maschoff, Randy Pearson, Terry Pearson and Brian Escherich.
Honarary bearers were granddaughters, Jeri Ann Taylor, Carrie Pearson, Deann Maschoff, Paula Chambers, Pamela Smidt and Lesa Escherich.
Evert John, son of John E. and Etta Rippentrop Sleper, was born December 17, 1917 on a farm north of Titonka. He received his education in the German Township No. 9 school near Titonka. After his schooling, Evert worked on the familyfarm and for farmers in the area.
He was married to Gertrude Mae Welhousen on February 22, 1939 in the farm home of her parents, north of Titonka. The couple farmed north of Titonka until 1984 when Evert retired and they moved into Titonka. Evert continued to help hisson in the farm operation after his retirement.
Evert was a member of the Titonka United Methodist Church. He worked at the ASCS office many years, was on the Titonka school board several years and also served on the election board. Evert loved farming, not only as an occupation, butalso as a hobby. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, bowling and being around horses, but his greatest love in life was his family.
Evert died Friday, August 1 (2003), in the Kossuth Regional Health Center at Algona.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude, and children, Gary and Jeriene Sleper, Titonka; Gayle and Larry Pearson, Wesley; Russel and Sandy Sleper, Titonka. He has seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, Greta and Walter Aukes, Woden; Edna and Lawrence Balvance, Buffalo Center and Millie Miller of Britt.
His parents, a brother, John Sleper; sisters, Anna Boomgarden and Margaret Stecker and a granddaughter, Sandra Sleper, preceded him in death." <>
