"Reformed Church were Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Isebrands and Mr. and Mrs. Johann Rippentrop. In the year 1900 Mrs. Isebrands and Mr. Ripentrop suffered the loss of their spouses. Each was left with a family to care for as a single parents. Mrs. Isebrands was the mother of eleven, including a three-week-old baby [Ida]. Mr. Rippentrop was the father of nine. Having many common interests and cares, they were joined in marriage in 1905. Mr. Rippentrop was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, and came with his parents to America in 1867. Their first home in the new land was in Ogle County, Illinois, but after four years the family moved to Parkersburg, Iowa. Here he met and married Mareka Willemssen, born at Holland, Iowa. With a family of two children they moved to Kossuth County in 1883, to a farm just a mile north of what is now the town of Titonka. The farm has been designated a century farm, and is presently occupied by a grandson, Robert Boekelman. The original house still is in use, but has been enlarged and remodeled several times. Children were: Court, Anna (Uken), Ulfet, Grace, Maggie (Boekelman), Mareka, George, Eltje (Sleper), Johanna (Ubben) and Gertrude (Rike).
Sena Isebrands Rippentrop was born in Stephenson County, Illinois. In 1871 she moved with her parents to Grundy County, Iowa and in 1878, to Kossuth County. Three of her brothers, Henry, Ben and Dick Meyer also lived in this community. Children from her first marriage were Etta, Allie, Dena, Carl, Henry (died in infancy), John, Senus, Ben and Henry (a second), Johanna (Ites), and Ida (Loats). John Isebrands, then living at Westview Nursing Home at Britt, Iowa, was featured in WHISTLE AND A SPUR as the oldest citizen at the time of the observance of the diamond jubilee in Titonka.7 Mrs. Rippentrop is remembered for her record as a midwife, having delivered ninety infants.
...
7 The passing of Mrs. Dick Harms early in the diamond jubilee yer gave the honor of the designation to Ben Isebrands."
