'John A. Groen July 28, 1931 - January 15, 2001 ALGONA - John A. Groen, 69, well known longtime Algona businessman, died Monday, Jan. 15 (2001), in the Kossuth Reginal Health Center. He had been ill with cancer.
Funeral service for him is Friday at 11 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Turner, the Rev. Patrick O'Neal and the Rev Henry Friedrich officiating. Burial is in East Lawn Cemetery with the Harris Funeral Home incharge of arrangements.
Casket bearers are Doug Groen, Dana Langfitt. Tony Dixon, Dan Hagg, Bruce Wolter and David Wehrspann.
Honorary bearers include Colin Menning, Bob Ruhnke, Chuck Reding, Bernie Weydert, Roger A. Wilson, Roger E. Long, Harley Haas and Henry Friedrich.
Visitation is at the Harris Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday).
John A. Groen, the son of Harm and Kate Welp Groen, was born July 28, 1931, on a farm near Titonka. The family moved to Burt where he was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school. John graduated from Burt HighSchool in 1949.
He was married to Elda Wolter in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Lotts Creek on Feb. 4, 1951. They lived at Algona where he was employed at Algona Produce 14 years. John then managed a farm supply store at Emmetsburg for two years andin 1965 he began working with Tietz Construction at Algona.
John then operated his own construction buriness, Groen Builders, specializing in house construction. He was later joined in business by his son, Larry, then by Colin Menning and the business was known as Groen-Menning Builders. Duringhis years in construction John built 130 homes in Algona and the surrounding rural areas. He retired in March of 2000.
John was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he held various offices. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren, woodworking, fishing and major league baseball. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He and Elda enjoyed travelingand country western music which took them to Branson, MO quite frequently.
John is survived by his wife, Elda and two children; Susan and Ted Hall, Forest City; Larry and Linda Groen, Algona. There are 10 grandchildren.
Also surviving are five sisters, Gladys Doege and Velma Dixon, Burt; Kathlene Pringle, Donahue, IA; Betty Gettman, Meldon, IL and Patty Langfitt, Clarion. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene Petersen; his parents, Harm andKate Groen; two brothers and a sister. Richard and Arthur Groen and Lavina Devine.' <>
