Cooter of 5301North Merridian, Apt. 113; Oklahoma City, OK 73112. *(Muriel is now deceased.) #I. Moses Witt Stamps was born in the year 1772, probably in HenryCo., VA. His middle name is his mother's surname. In 1782, referring tothe tax list for Surrey County, NC, page 101, we find mention of TimothyStam ps, James Stamps and Edward Witt as being in Captain Gaines District. It is thought that Timothy Stamps and James Stamps were his father's brothers and Edward Witt his mother's brother and thus uncle to Moses Witt Stamps. Moses Stamps married Sarah Ann Eason about, or prior to, 1795 in North Carolina, probably Surry County. Sarah Ann was the daughter of Moses Eason & Sarah Rice. Her brothers w ere Whitmell, Rice and Abraham Eason. For her wedding gown, Sarah Ann carded and spun and wove her own material. It is said to have been so sheer that she could draw a width of it through herweddin g ring. After their marriage, the Stamps moved to Jackson Co., GA. According to an article in The Annals of Our Kin by Mary Pearl Brown Price, Moses moved "to Jackson Co., GA in 1795, bringing his young wife and one or two small children." This would suggest that Moses and Sarah Ann married sooner than 1795. The above mentioned article goes on to state that Moses "bought several tracts of lan d in the fertile valleys of the Oconee River and Buffalo Creek, where he conducted large farms and also was a locksmith and a blacksmith. He drew land in Oglethorpe County in 1804, but never lived th ere. At least, we have no record of his having lived there. In 1818, Moses sold all of his lands in Jackson County to George Headen, moving to the neighboring county of Gwinnett, then to Clarke, bac k to Jackson, then to Fayette County, and finally to Coweta County."1 Moses participated in two land draws in Oglethorpe County in 1804. On April 09, 1812 he was appointed captain in the243d Distri ct of the Jackson County Militia.2 He purchased from his brother, William Stamps,150 acres on Sandy Creek; which land he later sold. He also purchased from, William Stamps, 80 acres on Sandy Creek.3 He bought land from the following: from Isaac Boring on July 13, 1805; from Gilbert Brooks onJan. 31, 1807; from John Griffin on July of 1811; from Jane Beaver on March 11, 1813; and from Isaac Bor ing on Nov. 17, 1815.4 In 1821 he participated in a land draw in Clarke Co., GA. On Dec. 19, 1829 he purchased lot 168 in Coweta County from Holman and sold it in 1849 to Jacobus Gibson; at which ti me he lived in Heard County. According to the 1830 Census of Gwinnett Co., GA, there were in Moses'family: 1 male over 45; 1 male 10 to 16; 3 males 16 to 26; 1 female over 45; 1 female 10 to 16; 2 f emales to 10; 1 female under 10; 1 female to26; 1 male 16 to 18. The 18 Census of Coweta County indicates that he and his wife were 50 to 60; 1 son 10 to 15; 1 daughter 20 to 30; 1 daughter under 5; a man 80 to 90 (presumably, his father, Thomas Stamps, Sr.). The 18 Census of Coweta County, Cedar Creek District, indicates that he and his wife are 60 to70; 1 daughter 1 to 20. ==================== ========================================================== 1 The Annals of Our Kin, by Mary Pearl Brown Price of Atlanta, GA.,page 85. Mary Price writesin her book that Mos es and Ann "lived a long and happylife together, rearing their children up in the way they should go, both dying about 1847." His wife was at the wedding of one of their grand-daughters in 1847, when she died suddenly. Ann had been a physician of note, and made house calls all over the countryside, travelling on horseback to her patients.1 Moses Stamps died at the age of 78, in 1850 "of old age" , in CarrollCounty.2 On Sunday, Sept. 01, 1974, a dedication service was held at the IndianCreek Baptist Church near Bowden, Carroll Co., GA, for the placement of agovernment marker placed on Moses' g ravesite. The marker was placed bythe government in tribute to Moses' service in the War of 18. Theceremony was attended by many of his descendants and contributors to thishistory. Interesting to see how the county lines changed in those years forFayette, Coweta, Carroll and Campbell Counties in Georgia which suggests that all of those courthouses should be checked for legal records such asdeeds, wills, estates, etc. for ancestors known to be in those countiesbetween 1820's to 1850, for the "to do list", future references. > From: "Sharon Martin" <shazza@ netcommander.com> ===============================================================================
