BARONY OF FURNIVALLE (III, 4)

THOMAS (DE FURNIVALLE), LORD FURNIVALLE, son and heir, born at Alton, 22June 1322. When he had proved his age, the King took his homage, 18 July1343, and he had livery of his father's lands. On 1 March 1343/4 he hadlivery of his purparty of the knights' fees and advowsons late ofTheobald de Verdon. He accompanied the King in his expedition to Sluys inJuly 1345, being in the retinue of the Earl of Suffolk, Admiral of theFleet, and served in the retinue of Thomas, Bishop of Durham, from theKing's arrival at La Hogue, 12 July 1346, till his return to England. On3 October 1354 he obtained the lands, &c., which Elizabeth de Mountaguhad held in dower or otherwise for life of his inheritance. He wassummonecd to Councils from 20 June 1358 to 10 February 1361/2, and toParliament from 20 November 1348 to 4 December 1364, by writs directedThome de Furnivall', FournyvaIl', or the like. On 1 December 1360, he hadlivery of the manor and advowson of Farnham Royal, and the hamlet ofSeer, Bucks, the King having taken his homage therefor; on 5 February1360/1 of the manors of Stoke Verdon and Wilsford, Wilts; and on 6October 1361 of 4 1/2 knights' fees: all of which Elizabeth de Burgh hadheld in dower. On 10 February 1361/2 he was ordered, under pain offorfeiture, to join Lionel, Earl of Ulster, in Ireland, with his men, forthe defence of that country, by the quinzaine of Easter next, at thelatest: as he had not hitherto repaired thither, nor sent men in contemptof the King, whereby the King was moved to anger.

He married, 1stly, in or before 1336, Margaret. She was living, 20 June1344. He married, 2ndly, Joan, formerly wife of Sir John BRET, anddaughter and heir of Sir Thomas MOUNTENEY, of Cowley and Shirecliffe, co.York, and Bulcote, Notts. He died s.p., 21 April 1365, aged 42,intestate, and was buried in Worksop Priory. On 22 October 1365 his widowhad livery of the manors of Alton and Treeton, which had been assigned toher as dower by the King, and on 26 October following the Chancellor ofIreland was ordered to assign her dower in that country. She, who wasborn 29 September 1321, died 24 February 1395/6, aged 74. [CompletePeerage V:585-7, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
