Thomas de Furnivall(e), 2nd Lord (Baron) Furnivall(e), as which called toParliament by write vp from 25 Aug 1318, it being probable that thesummons was to him in right of his wife's position as a great heiress; b.c 1291-1301; m. 24 Feb 1317/8 Joan (born 9 or 11 Aug 1303; m. 1st 28April 1317 John de Montagu (dsp & vp by 14 Aug 1317), eldest son of 2ndLord (Baron) Montagu of the 1299 creation; d. 2 Oct 1334), eldestdaughter and coheir of Theobald de Verdun, 1st/2nd Lord (Baron) Verdun,who brought him Alton Castle and other estates in Staffs, and died 5, 7,or 14 Oct 1339. BARONY OF FURNIVALLE (II, 3)

THOMAS (DE FURNIVALLE), LORD FURNIVALLE, son and heir, by 1st wife. Hemarried, 24 February 1317/8 Joan, widow of John DE MOUNTAGU (son and heirapparent of Sir William DE MOUNTACU), and 1st daughter and coheir of SirTheobald DE VERDON, of Alton, co. Stafford [LORD VERDON], by his 1stwife, Maud daughter of Sir Edmund DE MORTEMER, of Wigmore, co. Hereford[LORD MORTEMER]. On 7 September 1318 the King took his fealty, and he andhis wife had livery of the castle of Alton with its members, valued at£29 11s 4d. a year. On 29 November following they had livery of herpurparty of two-thirds of her father's knights' fees in England, and theChancellor of Ireland was ordered to assign her purparty of two-thirds ofher father's lands, knights' fees, and advowsons, in Ireland. Owing todisputes among the coheirs, the lands late of Theobald in England wereresumed into the King's hand, 5 February 1327/8, but the castle of Altonwas committed to Thomas de Furnivalle, to hold during pleasure, 10February following. On 16 October 1328 the King took the homage ofThomas, and he and his wife had livery of the castle of Alton with itsmembers, valued at £58 15s. 7d. a year, which the King had assigned tothem as Joan's purparty of her father's lands. On 24 October 1331 theChancellor of Ireland was ordered to divide the lands late of Theobald deVerdon in that country into four equal parts, and to give livery to thecoheirs of their purparties. Owing to further disputes, new extents wereorder to be made of the lands late of Theobald in England, and theselands were again resumed into the King's hand, 19 February 1331/2, andfinally partitioned in Chancery, Friday after St. Gregory [13 March]following, and Thomas and Joan had livery of her purparty, viz., thecastle of Alton with its members, now valued at £95 19s. 11d. a year, 26March 1332. He was aged 40 and more at his father's death. On 6 June 1332the King took his homage, and he had livery of his father's lands. He wassummoned to accompany the King to Ireland with as great a force as hecould muster, 28 January 1331/2, and (the expedition having beenpostponed) 12 July 1332. He was summoned for Military Service from 20March 1318/9 to 27 March 1335, to Councils from 30, December 1324 to 15June 1338, and to Parliament from 25 August 1318 to 25 August 1339I, bywrits directed Thome de Furnivall' or de Fournivall' (with the addition,during his father's lifetime, of juniori), whereby he is held to havebecome, in 1318, LORD FURNIVALLE.

His wife, Joan, who was born at Wootton in Stanton Lacy, 9 or 11 August1303, and baptized in the church of Onibury, Salop, died at Alton, 2October 1334, aged 31, and was buried 7 or 8 January 1334/5, in CroxdenAbbey. He died at Sheffield, 5, 7, or 14 October 1339, and was buried, 29May 1340, in Beauchief Abbey. [Complete Peerage V:583-4, (transcribed byDave Utzinger)]
