BARONY OF HAMILTON [SCT] (II) 1479

EARLDOM OF ARRAN [SCT] (II, 1) 1503

JAMES (HAMILTON), LORD HAMILTON [SCT], son and heir of James, LORD HAMILTON [SCT], by his 2nd wife, Mary, previously wife of Thomas BOYD, EARL OF ARRAN [SCT], and daughter of JAMES II. He succeeded his father 12 November 1479, being then about four years old. In 1502 he was sent to Denmark to aid in a naval expedition against Sweden. He was P.C. in 1503, when he was sent to conclude a marriage between James IV and Margaret, daughter of Henry VII; after which, by charter, 11 August 1503, he was created EARL OF ARRAN [SCT], his cousinship to the King being therein recited. In 1513, before Flodden, he was in command of a Scottish fleet against England but effected nothing. On the death of the King at Flodden, he yielded his claim to be appointed Regent, to Albany, by whom he was in 1517, made one of the Lords of Regency. He commanded the army for the King against Lennox at Linlithgow, 4 September 1526.

He married, 1stly, shortly before 28 April 1490, when he was aged about 15, and she about 13, Elizabeth, widow of Sir Thomas HAY (son and heir apparent of Lord HAY OF YESTER], daughter of Alexander (HOME), 2nd LORD HOME, by his 2nd wife, Nichola, daughter and heir of George KER, of Samuelstown. From her he obtained a divorce in the Eccles. Court, Glasgow, 16 November 1504, on the ground that her first husband, Sir Thomas HAY, though then dead, had been alive (though supposed to be dead) at the time of her second marriage. He married, 2ndly, between 11 and 23 November 1516. Janet, widow of Sir Robert LIVINGSTON, of Easter Weemyss, daughter of Sir David BEATON, of Creich, Comptroller of Scotland. She died about 1522. He died between 26 March and 21 July 1529, at his place of Kinneil. [Complete Peerage I:220-1, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

He was a nobleman of great accomplishments. He took part in a naval expedition against the Swedes in 1502 and at a tournament held in 1508 he was the champion archer on foot or horse in all of Scotland. In 1503, he was created Earl of Arran, the Gaelic-speaking island in the Forth of Clyde on which the family then made their home at Brodick Castle. Janet Beaton was his 2nd marriage. He was divorced from Elizabeth Home. He acceded 11 Aug 1503

Privy Councillor, Admiral of the Scottish Fleet 1513, Lord of Regency under the Duke of Albany 1517, commanded the Royal army against the Earl of Lennox Sep 1526. He is supposed to have married 1st 1490 and is believed to have divorced her subsequently in 1504 on the grounds that the Master, although believed to be dead, was actually alive at the critical time. (In fact, the Master had married in 1483 Elizabeth Borthwick, who was alive at the time of his death, so the grounds for the divorce appear suspicious, even though it was confirmed four years later)
