William Henry is probably named for both grandfathers: William H. BURT and Virginia DAVIS' father, Henry (also rumored to be William Henry)
Apparently William married 1st his step-sister Mary Charlton cir 1866/67, a son James born and died in infancy, son John born cir 1868 (2 yrs. old in 1870 census). Mary died near childbirth, John stayed in his grandfather's household, James Charlton.
William stayed in Rutherford Co. and is listed as a "Cleark" in the 1870 Census. He married shortly after to Frances/Fanny Walker - as noted 1871.
William appears to have had some strains on finances, as he sold property in 1869 to pay debts, and mortgaged his crops in 1872 to pay more debts.

1900 - Living in La Vergne, Rutherford Co. with wife Fannie E., and two youngest sons, Walker (aged 15) and Harry L. (aged 13). In this census, William’s father is said to have been born in NC (verfied), mother born in TN (assumed. 1910 census says she was born in NC. No evidence). Fanny states both her paretns are born in VA. There have been different sources on her father John Walker being born in VA and TN.
1910 Living in La Vergne, Rutherford Co. near daughter Virginia and her husband, Earnest Jarman. In this census record, William BURT’s parents are both shown as born in NC. This would be new information about his mother, who was presumed born in TN. Also - Francis Walker Burt says both parents were born in VA.
As recalled by my grandmother, Leona Burt Warner
"My grandfather (William Henry BURT) was a salesman, mostly sewing machines [note by researcher Donna Warner Lehman - this is never noted in records. She may have meant her father, not her grandfather]. "New Home" brand. Mother was an excellent seamstress. He inherited quite a lot of money. Had a nice farm in La Vergne. One of his uncles had an import business. The Burt's loved my mother and gave her beautiful things like a black box inlaid with mother of pearl. He also served in the Civil War as a very young man"
(Grandma's only recollections of this side of the family)
"My Grandma BURT died before I was born, but after my mother was married because my mother used to talk about taking care of her until she died. She had terrible arthritis and was quite an invalid. I think she was from Virginia, because I heard about how her and her sister (don't remember her name) had a Negroe servant who did absolutely everything for them . I also heard that her mother had died when she was a young girl and that her father pampered her.
My Grandfather BURT died when I was very small, maybe 2-4 yrs old. In fact, Mama said I was the last person to see or talk to him, I had gone and jumped on his bed and when she came to take me away, he said 'No, let the baby stay and visit with me', they came later and found he had died.
His firstborn son, John, who was my father's half-brother, was dropped by his Nurse when he was a baby. His back was broken and when it healed he had a hump. His own daughter said, ' I love my daddy so much, he's the nicest man in the world! I especially love his little hump!' Everyone loved Uncle John, he really was the nicest man in the world. He was the one who stayed with the telephone company the longest and ended up being an executive with a bigger telco in Atlanta. The papers there carried a big obituary about him when he died. His wife was Aunt Lettie.
Auntie Virginia went to St. Cecilia's boarding school."

I, William H. BURT make this as an appendix to my last will and testament. It is my will and desire that F.A. LOUGHMILLER be appointed to settle up my Executorship, in my father's Estate. There are several claims, one on Thomas S. BURT for about $60, some on Wm. E. VENABLE, one on Hugh FRANCIS. They all belong to me individually, as I have settled with the Clerk for them, as a reference to his books will show. I have never been allowed anything for selling the land. I want that allowed.
