== Biography ==
Lack of agreement exists about who his parents were. That he was related to the early Gardiner family of Rhode Island is probable, but who were his parents. Caroline E Robinson in her 1919 work on the Gardiners of Narragansett,Robinson, Caroline Elizabeth. ''[[Space:The Gardiners of Narragansett|The Gardiners of Narragansett]]'' (Providence, Rhode Island, 1919) [https://books.google.com/books?id=YvwcAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA3 Page 3] & [https://books.google.com/books?id=YvwcAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA8 Page 8]; [https://books.google.com/books?id=YvwcAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA208 Page 208 (see note 23)]: contradicts herself. Within the narrative where she outlines the family (pp 3, 8-9), she attaches Jeremiah as son of [[Gardiner-38|George Gardiner]] by his last wife [[Ballou-73|Lydia Ballou]]. But later in the same work (p. 208, note 23) she notes: : "It appears exceedingly improbable that Jeremiah Gardiner was a son of George,1, no direct evidence of such a fact being known. He is not not mentioned in the will of Robert, as are Joseph and Peregrine, and as he almost certainly would have been, had he been an own brother, only three or four years younger. George Gardiner seems to have lived only eight or nine years after the earliest record of his reputed second marriage, and to have had a large family without Jeremiah. The latter may have been a son of Benoni [ [[Gardiner-178|Benoni Gardiner]] and his wife [[Eldred-87|Mary]] ] and can easily be assigned a latter birth than 1676 or 1677, in view of his marriage about 1711."
1711 is when he first purchased property; assuming he had recently achieved majority status, this would place his birth much closer to 1685-1690.
