'''Note:''' !William Talbert/Tulburt of Surry Co. NC must have been a very good friend of Daniel. Daniel's father sold William Talbert/Tulburt 50 acres of land in 1815 - the year before he sold 50 acres to Daniel. Daniel named his first child after William Talbert/Tulburt. [CAS].
2 !Could he have gone to Rock Co. WI where granddaughter, Nellie (dau. of George), was born in 1866 Beloit? [CAS].
2 !Checked cemetery records of Green and Rock Counties, WI, for this family -- none found under name Brown. [CAS].
2
!He was of German descent. [15-16].
2 !Matilda Fletcher wrote to Elsie Requartte about 1904 that she had traced the Brown family back to Capt. Isaac Brown (father of Daniel and Susannah) whose name is on the colonial records at Raleigh, NC, as a Rev. soldier. [17] (This is not the correct line, but that Isaac did have children named Daniel and Susannah.) [CAS].

Richard Green's land to Joel Sparks land and is.
empowered to call on the following hands to put said.
road in good order: Joel Sparks, Daniel Brown,...
John Brown, James Brown, Isaac Brown, Wiley.
Messack, Ellisha Messack.....
2 !Marion Brown (Charles, Daniel, Daniel) said that Daniel walked from Surry County, NC, to Bertrand, Michigan. Then he selected the land he wanted in Cass County, MI. Then he walked to Detroit to take out the legal papers to own it. From there he walked back to Surry County, NC, to get the family. Elizabeth delivered a girl at Whitewater, Indiana, and they then went up to Cass County, MI. [23].
2
!From a historian -- probable route from NC to Michigan:
Cumberland Gap.
25 N through KY to Lexington.
up to Cincinnati.
to Whitewater, Wayne Co., IN.
up to US 30.
up to State 15. Up to Cass County, MI, probably through South Bend, IN; the road ran near Healthwin Hospital by the old mill near Izaak Walton League; 22 miles a day could be made with wagon and walking; took about a week from Fort Wayne to South Bend; the state road was not available until JAN 1832 (highway 33 in 1978).
2 ! The general procedure to obtain land in Michigan from the government was for prospective purchasers to obtain maps of available land and related surveyors' notes, then to travel or send a representative to examine the property, using a compass and maps to get there. Then they returned to the land office to make payement. Sale records were sent to Washington, and purchasers would later receive a presidentially-signed patent showing ownership. Land offices in Michigan sold more than 4 million acres in 1836 -- literally doing a "land office business" -- the most that year of any territory or state and in contrast with the 447,780 acres sold in 1833. The Kalamazoo office alone sold 1,634,500 acres in 1836, and was so busy that a tent city sprung up on empty Main Street lots to accommodate the crowds that poured in to buy land. [30].
2 !Daniel Brown located in the western part of the township (Niles) in the spring of 1830, but sold out in the fall to William Cotton, who lived there many years. [10 - Berrien Co. MI].
2 !William Cotten (Niles Twp.) bought out Daniel Brown in the fall of 1830 for $30 and his crop of corn. [29 - Berrien Co. MI]. William Cotton and Mariah Vorhis married in Wayne Co. IN on August 15, 1822. His father Isaac was a Baptist minister in Richmond, Ind. [29].
2 ! Cornelius Sparks married Susannah StephensStevens in Rowan Co. NC in 1812. They moved to Wayne Co. IN with her parents, Spencer and Elizabeth (RobardRupert) Stevens, in the fall of 1814. Cornelius and his brother-in-law, Joseph Stephens (also a native of Rowan Co. NC living in Wayne Co. IN), came with seven others from Indiana on a prospecting tour in 1828. In OCT 1828, Cornelius moved his family to Niles Township settling in the bend of the river. In 1829, Joseph Stephens brought his family to Michigan settling in Niles Township. Joseph Stephens was married to his cousin, Arma Stevens, sister of Cornelius' wife, Susannah. 1840 Berrien Co. MI census - Cornelius Sparks and Joseph Stephens listed next to each other. William Cotten was also from Wayne Co. IN. [4,30,37-much more detail]. Earliest entry (T7S R17W Sec.7) for Joseph Stephens in Berrien Co. was 1830, residence Lenawe Co. MI. [36] In 1828 Berrien Co. was part of Lenawee Co. MI. [37]. Note that Daniel Brown sold land in Surry Co. NC to Joel Sparks in OCT 1829. [CAS] There were two Joel Sparks in Surry/Wilkes Co. NC of the same age group, but 3rd cousins once removed of each other. [37].

!Crawford Co. WI death records start in 1876. [CAS].
2 ! If he died in Marietta Twp. he might have been buried in the Cook-Wood Pioneer cemetery. All the oak markers were burned off due to a fire which caught in the fields. [18,31]. Note: Daniel's grandson-in-law owned this family cemetery and he did not marry Daniel's granddaughter until 1868. [CAS]. There is a Christ Cemetery where many of the Reynolds and other early settlers are buried. [31] This is on land once owned by Henry and Catherine (Daniel's daughter) Beach which they sold in 1856, and very close to where George and Hiram owned their land, but the first burial there was in 1869 per gravestones.
