    Hij is dan 24 jaar oud. Bij de afbeelding valt te zien dat je wel moest betalen om poorter te worden.
    Oneerlijk natuurlijk aan de ene kant, er was onderscheid tussen de verschillende klassen hiermee. Er woonden er velen in de stad die arm waren en dan ook geen poorter. Aan de andere kant had de stad dringend inkomsten nodig. Het liep tegen het einde van de 80-jarige oorlog en de stad had het flink te verduren gehad. In 1625 was na lange belegering de stad gedwongen om zich over te geven aan de Spanjaarden en keerde het katholicisme terug. Een paar maanden voordat Jan aankomt in Breda wordt de stad terugveroverd door Frederik Hendrik en zijn Staatse leger.
    Het kan bijna geen toeval zijn dat Jan nu juist dit moment kiest om te verhuizen naar Breda. Hij is winckelier en ziet blijkbaar kansen. Dat pakte goed uit, want hijzelf en ook zijn nageslacht lijken succesvolle ondernemers te zijn, zich vooral richtend op vertier, gastvrijheid en lekkernijen.
