(note: stone must be wrong birth date, as he was 4 years old in 1880 census, and obit says he is 58 in 1933.)

JOHN SKAHEN, 58, a resident of the town of Rantoul, died Sunday night within an hour after being struck by a car while walking on Highway 57 from the John Schabach farm a short distance south of Hilbert. Edgar Hackbarth, 19, of Hilbert was the driver of the car which inflicted the injury. He was accompanied by Miss Anna Nuss of this city and was driving back to Hilbert when the fatal accident occurred. Shaken is said to have been walking northward on the left hand side of the road. Hackbarth, approaching from the south, turned out to pass another car and struck Skahen as he did so.

The body was taken to the Pfeffer undertaking rooms here. An inquest was held at the court house here Monday afternoon by Dr. J. J. Minahan, coroner. On the jury were Arno Tank, D. C. Flatley, Carl Lehner, Fred Schumacher, Ralph Mortimer, Jacob Dohr. The verdict found that Mr. Skahen had “come to his death by being struck by an automobile driven by Edgar Hackbarth.”

The funeral was held from St. Augustine church Wednesday, Rev. F. M. McKeogh officiating. Burial was in the family lot in St. Augustine cemetery.

John Skahen was born in the town of Rantoul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Skahen. He spent practically his entire life in Calumet County. He served in the Marine Corps during the World war, but did not go over-seas.

Survivors are his father and two brothers, Joseph and Daniel, at home; seven sisters, Mrs. Frank Markow, Fond du Lac; Mrs. Robert Riordan, Milwaukee; Mrs. B. T. McCougal, Oconto Falls; Mrs. Harvey Hodgins, Gillett; Mrs. Edward King, Kaukauna; Mrs. Geo. Bowe, Town of Stockbridge; and Mrs. Frank King, Chilton.
Pallbearers were six brothers-in-law; B. T. McDoughal, Harvey Hodgins, Edward King, Frank King, Robert Riordan and George Bowe.
