Thomas Skahen, 82, of the town of Rantoul, was bound over to circuit court by Justice of the Peace today charged with the murder of his son, Joe, last Monday morning.
All the evidence presented at the trial tended to show that the aged defendant has for several years suffered from a nervous affliction which affected his mental condition. The defense presented no witnesses. At the conclusion of the testimony offered by the state’s witnesses, L. P. fox, attorney for Thomas Skahen, submitted for the record in behalf of his client that the said client was insane for feeble minded before and at the time of the act was committed.

Joseph Skahen was found by his brother, Dan, in an unconscious condition in bed in the home about 2 a.m. Monday. Dad had been away since Sunday morning. When he returned after midnight, he testified at the inquest Monday, he heard groaning in Joseph’s room. He went to the room and found his brother in an unconscious condition, covered with blood about the head and face. A common carpenter hammer lay on the floor behind the kitchen stove, he said.
Dan called a neighbor and the priest and doctor. Sheriff Gerhard B. Jensen, Coroner J. J. Minahan and district attorney Eick were notified. When Sheriff Jensen arrived he found the hammer on a back porch covered with blood. He testified at the inquest that he observed blood on the hands of the father who readily admitted when questioned that he had beaten his son on the head with the hammer. He said that he sometimes did things for which he was sorry afterwards. Dan testified that he believed his father was at times mentally unbalanced for the last three years.
Leo King, a grandson of Thomas Skahen, was asleep in the house at the time the attack took place. He was visiting at the home and said at the inquest that he had retired about 8:30 and heard nothing until after Dan came home.
Another member of the family, John Skahen, 59, met a tragic death the evening of June 11. He was homeward bound on Highway 57 in Hilbert village limits when a car approaching from the rear attempted to pass another car and struck him.
Joseph Skahen was born in the town of Rantoul, Mar. 26, 1879. He spent his entire life on the family homestead. Besides his father, he is survived by one brother, Dan, at home, and seven sisters, Mrs. Frank King, Chilton; Mrs. Edward King, Kaukauna; Mrs. Robert Riordan, Milwaukee; Mrs. Geo. Bowe, Stockbridge; Mrs. Harvey Hodgins, Gillett; Mrs. B. P. McDougal, Oconto Falls; Mrs. Frank Markow, Fond du Lac.
The funeral was held from St. Augustine’s church Wednesday, Rev. F. M. McKeogh officiating. Pallbearers were six brothers-in-law. Interment was in St. Augustine’s cemetery. Many relatives and friends from a distance were present at the funeral and to convey their sympathy to the members of the family who were deeply shocked by the tragedy.
