Notes about Lorentz Schnepp Sr. 7th GGF

Lorentz Schnepp, like his father and grandfather, was a shepherd and followed his trade in various villages in central Alsace and throughout his life made the mark of a shepherd's crook next to his signature on various baptismal and public documents. The first child of Lorentz and Anna Catherina was born at Bischholtz, the next two at Duntzenheim, the next one at Buswiller and the fifth child at Zoebersdorf. By 1702 he was the village shepherd at Griesbach, in the parish of Neuwiller, where two more children were born and between 1705 and 1710 the family was at Geiswiller, in the parish of Printzheim. By 1711 Lorentz was working in Wickersheim and from 1714 to 1717 he was at Melsheim. About 1717 Lorentz and Catherina acquired a house in Geiswiller and remained there.

In October 1725 Lorentz and Catherine drew up a will in which the surviving partner received life-time rights to the house and property after which it would go to the children or heirs of Catherina. According to an inventory of property drawn up in 1728 after Catherina's death, their estate consisted of several small vineyards and fields which Catherina inherited from her father, livestock and tools which Lorentz had before marriage and a two story house, with a yard and garden, well and stable in Geiswiller which they acquired after marriage.

Lorentz married Anna Barbara Stockel in 1728 and the following year he turned the house and property over to his daughter, Anna Maria, and her husband, Lorentz Hauptmann, who had to pay her brothers and sisters for their interest in the property. Lorentz and Anna Barbara and their baby daughter, Felicitas, moved to Gumbrechtshoffen a few miles further north and he is listed there in a 1730 tax record as a Schirmer (legal resident but not a full citizen) and his occupation was listed as a Nonnenmaker, (castrator of livestock). Lorentz died in 1732 and his widow, Barbara, married Jacob Kern of Zutzendorf in 1736.

Johannes and Lorentz, The oldest surviving sons of Lorentz and Anna Catherine left for America soon after their father died, but the others all remained in Alsace.
