Notes about JOHANNES "Hans" Schnepp 8th GGF

Johannes (Hans) Schnepp was a shepherd who worked in various villages in north central Alsace. He had fifteen children by three wives. Hans began married life with Brigitta, as a shepherd in the village of Eschau, near Illkirch and had their three children baptized in the church at Illkirch, with Hans Weidach, a citizen of Illkirch among the sponsors. After the death of Brigitta, Hans married Maria Ammel and had one son born at Graffenstaden but by 1669 had moved further north to the village of Pfaffenhoffen, where he took work as the village shepherd.

In the 1670s Hans worked at several villages including, Engwiller and Ingenheim but about 1682 he settled at Waltenheim, a few miles south of Pfaffenhoffen, where he was the community shepherd. Maria died there in the winter of 1683 and Hans returned to Illkirch and married Maria Weidach, the daughter of his old friend, Hans Weidach. They lived at Waltenheim until 1687 and then moved to nearby Eckendorf and by 1694 were in Wickersheim. Hans died and was buried at Pfaffenhoffen in December 1701. His widow, Maria, lived many more years and died at Eckendorf, February 7, 1732.[1] Excerpt from: Daniel W. Bly, From the Rhine to the Shenandoah, Volume I, Baltimore, MD (1992), pp. 155-6.
