Notes about FRANCES Aylesworth 13th GGM

Frances Ayleworth was the daughter of Walter Ayleworth and Jane Stockett of Canterbury, Kent, England. She appears on the Ayleworth pedigree taken in 1619 during the Visitation of Kent. The Latin form of her name, Francisca, is used in the pedigree:[1]

Frances Ayleworth was married to her first cousin, Thomas Stockett II, on October 15, 1616.[2] The event was held at St Cosmus & St Damian-in-the-Blean, Kent, England.[3] The church dates to the 12th Century and still operates today.[4]

Frances Ayleworth Stockett and her cousin Thomas Stockett are also shown at the bottom of this Ayleworth pedigree:[5]

Frances Ayleworth Stockett was widowed in 1638.[7] At the time, the family was living at Bekesbourne, Kent, England. The area is famous for growing hops for English ale.[8] During the time the family lived in England, nearly everyone drank ale, as it was perceived to be safer than water.

During her marriage to Thomas Stockett, Frances gave birth to nine known children, of which 7 survived to adulthood. Frances Ayleworth Stockett died in 1646. Around the time of her death and shortly afterward, the English Civil War was raging. Charles I was beheaded in 1649, just three years later. It is said that the family had to "escape to the Continent" for a short while during the frenzy, because they were "staunchly loyal" to the king of England.[9] In this context, "the Continent" ls likely to refer to France.

Frances Ayleworth and Thomas Stockett II were the progenitors of the Colonial Maryland branch of the Stockett family.[10] Four of their sons immigrated to the Maryland Colony in the 1660's: Colonel Lewis Stockett, Doctor Francis Stockett, Captain Thomas Stockett, and Mister Henry Stockett.
