Johannes wordt geboren op 15 maart 1892 in Bergen op Zoom. Hij groeit op in een Nederlands Hervormd gezin en werkt als fabriekarbeider. Als late tiener en opnieuw als twintiger is hij in aanvaring geweest met justitie, waarvoor hij enkele maanden in de cel heeft gezeten. Wellicht heeft zijn tweede overtreding, wanneer hij sergeant in militaire dienst is, een rol gespeeld in zijn vertrek naar Nederlands-Indië.
Op 8 december 1941, een dag na de aanval op Pearl Harbor, verklaart de Nederlandse regering vanuit Londen Japan de oorlog. De Japanners grijpen dit aan om Nederlands-Indië direct binnen te vallen. Een verrassing is het niet. Vanwege zijn natuurlijke oliebronnen en geostrategische ligging hebben de Japanners al langer de verovering van de Nederlandse kolonie op het oog om over heel Oost-Azië te kunnen heersen. Tegen deze achtergrond wordt Johannes met de rang van onderluitenant der infanterie onder de wapenen geroepen om de kolonie te verdedigen.
Na een veldtocht van drie maanden hebben de Japanners de belangrijkste strategische punten in de archipel ingenomen. Het slecht voorbereide KNIL, ernstig gehinderd door besluiteloosheid aan de top, maakt geen schijn van kans. Op 8 maart 1942 dwingen de Japanners het KNIL in Bandoeng tot de overgave. Johannes wordt samen met duizenden andere Nederlandse militairen in krijgsgevangenschap afgevoerd. Hij komt uiteindelijk terecht in een van de kampen op het Chinese eiland Hainan, waar hij als dwangarbeider moet werken in de haven, de ijzermijnen en bij de aanleg van wegen en het vliegveld. De leefomstandigheden zijn zeer primitief en de merendeels Nederlandse en Australische gevangenen krijgen met het verstrijken van de tijd steeds minder te eten. Wat de gevangenschap op Hainan extra zwaar maakt, is dat contact met de buitenwereld onmogelijk is. Door het harde werk, tropische ziektes en voortdurende mishandelingen verzwakken de gevangenen snel en vallen er tientallen doden.
Ook voor Johannes worden de ontberingen uiteindelijk te veel. Hij bezwijkt op 7 januari 1945 op 52-jarige leeftijd. Hij vindt zijn laatste rustplaats op de oorlogsbegraafplaats Sai Wan in Hongkong. - He died on January 7, 1945 in Hainan, Hainan, China, he was 52 years old.
