Leo heeft in Bussum de Broederse school doorlopen en heeft na het verlaten daarvan gewerkt bij zijn vader in de bakkerij, waar hij, na een poosje bij een botergrossier te hebben gewerkt, weer terug kwam en toen met zijn broer Jan heeft samen gewerkt. Maar de tijd besliste en tijdens de 1e note Hans (2e) wereldoorlog werd hij tijdens de mobilisatie opgeroepen (note Henny: is dit wel mogelijlk gezien de WO 14-18 en hij geboren is in 1904, kunnen de foto's misschien betrekkning hebben op zijn vader? )
Na deze ongetwijfeld spannende periode ging een van zijn wensen in vervulling. Hij kreeg een eigen zaak: DE GELDERSE WINKEL. Deze winkel was op de Rijnlaan in Utrecht. In 1938 geopend. Deze winkel gaf niet alleen werk maar ook een woning. Na negen jaar verkering trouwde hij met:
Margaretha van Wijngaarden (Tante Greet).

Deze winkel, die nu een thuis geworden was en in de tweede wereldoorlog ook een schuilplaats. Bovenin de deur werd er een plek ingericht waar hij zich kon verstoppen als de Duitsers een zoekactie uitvoerden.

Geleidelijk aan ging het wat slechter in de winkel want ook in deze buurt kwamen de grootwinkelbedrijven, waar niet van te winnen was. In 1950 is hij dan ook parttime gaan werken als boekhouder bij de verzekeringsmaatschappij. Bij AVS/VVM, waarvoor hij ook nog de moed op kon brengen om te gaan studeren. Eerst Engels en toen Boekhouden.
Dit werk beviel hem goed en in 1967 is hij daar dan ook invaste dienst gegaan.
De winkel werd gesloten en de familie verhuisde van de Rijnlaan naar de Reggestraat en toen naar de Balyelaan van waaruit hij de laatste jaren van zijn pensioen met een zekere regelmaat naar Spanje vertrok om daar het slechte weer te ontlopen.
