Louis de Wijze (Boxmeer, 30 mei 1922 – Berg en Dal, 20 juli 2009) was een Nederlands ondernemer en Holocaustoverlevende.

De Wijze groeide op in Boxmeer en verhuisde in 1932 naar Nijmegen. Hij doorliep de HBS aan de Kronenburgersingel. In de nacht van 17 op 18 november 1942 werd het Joodse gezin, behalve zus Elly, die het geluk had te kunnen onderduiken, opgepakt door de Duitse bezetter en overgebracht naar Kamp Westerbork. Eind maart 1944 werd hij op transport gezet naar concentratiekamp Auschwitz. Daar bleef hij tot het kamp op 27 januari 1945 bevrijd werd. Een week eerder ontsnapte hij aan de dodenmars. Louis de Wijze keerde, samen met zus Kitty, die in ander kampen had gezeten, terug uit de oorlog. Meer dan 20 familieleden overleefden niet.

Hij werd directeur van vleesbedrijf Homburg in Cuijk. Net als zijn vader, die ook voor de oorlog een vleesbedrijf bezat. Onder zijn leiding groeide het bedrijf uit tot een grote internationale speler in de vleesverwerking. Zijn verhalen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden opgetekend door Kees van Cadsand en in 1995 uitgegeven in het boek Ontsnapping uit de dodenmars, herinneringen van Louis de Wijze aan de concentratiekampen en transporten. Ook gaf hij vele lezingen waarbij hij zich actief inzette tegen antisemitisme en racisme. Hij was een van de bedenkers van het monument van de 102.000 stenen in Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork. Hij was onderscheiden als officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. In 2002 ontving hij de Burgemeester Dales Prijs, genoemd naar Ien Dales.

Naar zijn nichtje Kitty (Kaatje) de Wijze is in Nijmegen het pleintje genoemd waar de 400 omgekomen Nijmeegse Joden jaarlijks herdacht worden.

“Dat? Oh, dat is een telefoonnummer.” Zo verklaart Louis de Wijze aan zijn kinderen het nummer 175564 uit Auschwitz dat op zijn arm getatoeëerd staat. Louis de Wijze, zoon van een slager uit Cuijk, wordt nu vooral herinnerd als bestrijder van het antisemitisme.

Maar voor mensen uit Cuijk en omgeving blijft De Wijze toch in de eerste plaats de directeur van Homburg, tijdens carnaval beter bekend als Frits Frikandel.

Er valt in feite niet één leven van Louis de Wijze te beschrijven; het zijn er meerdere en allemaal even verschillend. De jonge Louis valt als 14-jarige op bij voetbalclub Quick’88. Zijn techniek mag dan wat te wensen overlaten, maar zijn wedstrijdmentaliteit maakt hem tot een talentvol spelertje. Desondanks moet hij – als jood – in 1941 van de een op de andere dag de club verlaten. “Ik moest naar een joodse club, maar die was er niet in Nijmegen.”

Toch gaat voetbal weer een belangrijke rol spelen in zijn leven. Als hij in oktober 1942 in kamp Westerbork komt, valt hij op door zijn goede spel. Dat komt hem vooral van pas als hij in maart 1944 op transport wordt gesteld naar concentratiekamp Auschwitz. Door zijn sportieve talent krijgt hij een relatief makkelijk baantje, veger in de fabriek. Later zegt hij: “Nee, uitwedstrijden speelden we niet en de Duitsers deden ook niet mee. Helaas niet, nee.”

Tijdens een zogeheten dodenmars weet De Wijze te ontkomen en hij loopt naar Berlijn. Hij verliest –naast zijn ouders en zijn stiefzus – veel familie; alleen zijn oudste zus Ellie weet op tijd onder te duiken en te overleven.

Na de oorlog pakt hij het werk op van zijn vader. Voor de oorlog was er een slachterij De Wijze, na de oorlog wordt dat Janssen-De Wijze en weer later wordt dat Homburg in Cuijk. De Wijze maakt de gigantische bloeitijd van het bedrijf mee. Van 60 werknemers in 1949 groeit het bedrijf naar 1.000 werknemers in 1970 tot bijna het dubbele, nog geen jaar later.

Aan die glorietijd komt abrupt een einde als Amerika wegvalt als land voor de ingeblikte ham. Er volgt een reeks van reorganisaties en ontslagen. De Wijze is dan directeur export. Ook aan die functie weet hij een eigen invulling te geven. Bij een congres in Italië is hij de zoveelste in een lange rij sprekers. Hij vraagt daarom in het Italiaans of hij moet praten of zingen. Cantare! roept het publiek. Wellicht opmerkelijk voor de congresgangers, maar inwoners van Cuijk kennen zijn zangtalent. Als Frits Frikandel zingt hij tijdens het carnaval onder meer Oh Cuijk aan de Maas (op de melodie van Au Champs Elysees).

Pas na zijn pensionering vertelt hij over zijn kampervaringen. In 2005 gaat hij samen met koningin Beatrix naar de herdenking van de 60-jarige bevrijding van Auschwitz. Daar ontmoet hij president Poetin en Chirac. Zonder aarzelen stapt hij op ze af en bedankt ze voor de bevrijding.

De Wijze overlijdt op 20 juli 2009. Zijn begrafenis op de joodse begraafplaats in Vierlingsbeek is de eerste sinds 1941.
