In de crisis jaren ontslagen bij de Bont & Leyten. Hier begon hij op zijn 13e jaar in 1889 te werken. Uit de Nijverheidsstatistiek van Struve en Bekaar uit de periode 1887-1889 is het volgende bekent over dit bedrijf. Gevestigd op de Singel 168-178 (in de telefoongids van 1915 wordt de Looiersdwarsstraat 9-17 vermeld). Medewerkers mannen ouder dan 18 jaar: 25; ouder dan 16 jaar: 3 en ouder dan 14 jaar: 2. Vrouwen ouder dan 18 jaar: 7 waarvan 1 gehuwd; ouder dan 16 jaar: 1; ouder dan 14 jaar: 2 en ouder dan 13 jaar: 1. De mannelijke werknemers waren gescheiden van de vrouwelijke. De werktijden waren zomers 11 uur van 7:00 tot 18:00 en 's winters van 7:00 tot 20:00. Er werd vooral in oktober en november overgewerkt. Zondag en 's nachts werd er niet gewerkt. Er was 1 krachtwerktuig met stoomaandrijving aanwezig goed voor 8 PK. Het verwarmde oppervlak was 25 m3. Het gebouw lag aan 2 zijde vrij en had 5 verdiepingen en goed daglicht, kunstlicht op gas, een tamelijke hygiëne (kon kennelijk beter want de meeste bedrijven worden met goed aangemerkt). Het bedrijf kende een bedrijfsziekenfonds, waaraan men verplicht was deel te nemen. Er waren regels voor werk dat door vrouwen, meisjes en kinderen mocht worden verricht, lucht en luchtverversing, privaten en urinoirs, schadelijke invloeden voor de gezondheid, gevaar bij brand, veiligheid van werktuigen, maatregelen en reglementen in het belang van gezondheid en veiligheid, uitvoerbaarheid van maatregelen, in het belang van gezondheid en veiligheid en zieken- en pensioenfondsen. Alleen de ondersteuning verzekering en maatregelen van eerste hulp bij ongevallen en verschaffing van woningen en onderwijs door de werkgever ontbreken. Op 01-09-1922 werd door de Nederlandse Chocolade- en Suikerwerken herdacht, dat hij 25 jaar geleden in dienst trad bij de firma. (bron: De Tijd, 29-08-1922)
