Bij zijn huwelijk ondertekent hij de huwelijksakte met "Vermoolen". Bij de geboorte van zijn kinderen wordt zijn naam geschreven als "Petrus Vermolen" en hij ondertekent de aktes ook met Vermolen. Ook op zijn bidprentje staat zijn naam geschreven als "Vermolen". Op zijn gezinskaart in het gemeentearchief Amsterdam staat in eerste instantie zijn familienaam, bij hem en zijn kinderen, vermeldt als "Vermolen". Later is daar handmatig bij alle namen een twee "o" erbij/boven geschreven. Zijn eerste drie kinderen, Adam Hermanus, Volkert Johannes en Theodorus hebben de familienaam "Vermolen". Zij worden ook met die naam vermeld op de overlijdensakte. Bij de geboorte van zijn dochter Maria Anna wordt ook de familienaam "Vermolen" geschreven. Op het bidprentje van Maria Anna wordt de familienaam ook geschreven als "Vermolen". Op haar gezinskaart in het gemeentearchief Amsterdam wordt haar familienaam geschreven als "Vermoolen". Bij de geboorte van zijn zoon Hendricus wordt zijn naam in de akte geschreven als "Vermoolen", waarmee hij de akte ook ondertekent. Bij het huwelijk van Hendricus is zijn broer Volkert Johannes één van de getuigen. In de huwelijksakte van Hendricus wordt zijn naam geschreven als "Vermoolen" evenals de naam van de bruidegom zelf. De naam van Petrus Vermoolen wordt dan geschreven als "Vermolen". Zij ondertekenen alle drie de huwelijksakte van Hendricus met "Vermolen". In 1872 ontstaat er een verandering in de schrijfwijze van de familienaam. De ambtenaar schrijft nu de naam van Petrus Vermoolen in de volgende 4 geboorteaktes als "Vermoolen". Hierdoor hebben zijn laatste 4 kinderen officieel de achternaam "Vermoolen" gekregen. In één gezin hebben de kinderen daardoor verschillende achternamen, zowel Vermolen als Vermoolen. Bij de laatste vier geboorteaktes ondertekent Petrus Vermoolen de aktes ook met "Vermoolen". Dit in tegenstelling tot de geboorteaktes van zijn eerste vier kinderen. In het gemeentearchief Amsterdam, bevolkingsregister, wordt in 1872 bij in de inschrijving op het adres Haarlemmerplein, buurt UU, nummer 32 het hele gezin ingeschreven met de familienaam "Vermolen".
