Johannes Bernardus Vasseur is op 3 januari 1869 stiekem naar Amerika vertrokken, daarbij zijn zwangere vrouw Dirkje Willems en vier kinderen, en een vijfde op komst in de steek latend. Dit na een greep uit de diaconiekas gedaan te hebben, waarover hij als diaken beschikte. Dit alles, naar eigen schrijven, omdat hij 3000 gulden, toebehorend aan Prins Frederik (1797-1881), uit zijn zak verloren had.
Hij voelde over zijn onbezonnen stap te laat berouw om terug te keren en overleed daar tweeënzestig jaar later en twee huwelijken verder op 92-jarige leeftijd in 1931.
Hun huwelijk werd in 1875 door de rechter ontbonden wegens kwaadwillige verlating.

Johannes Vasseur vertrekt 3-1-1869 naar Amerika. De echtscheiding wordt uitgesproken 8-6-1875 op grond van kwaadwillige verlating door de echtgenoot, die dan woont in Paterson, staat New Yersey, U.S.A. Hun kinderen zijn Catharina Elizabeth, geb. 1861, Paulus 1862-1864, Guurtje 1864, Pauline Geertruyda 1866, Gerrit 1867. Na zijn vertrek wordt geboren Johannes Bernardus, 6-6-1869.

Pieter Kuys kwam als knecht inwonen bij Dirkje, na het vertrek van haar man.
Voor hij met haar trouwt, worden nog geboren Pieter 1871, Gerrit 1872 en Jacob
1874. Zij krijgen de naam Vasseur.
