Notes about Carolus Petrus Marie (Charles) Vandamme


Gehuwd te Waterlandkerkje (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) op 20 mei 1899 met Hortensia Sturm, geboren in Waterlandkerkje op 19 maart 1874.  Ze was de dochter van Leopoldus Bernardus en van Hortensia Constantina de Milliano.

Aanvankelijk boerden ze te Waterlandkerkje, maar in 1902 namen zede hoeve Engelendael te St.-Jan-in-Eremo over nadat Karel's moeder en stiefvader op rust gegaan waren te St.-Laureins.

Karel Van Damme en Hortensia Sturm boerden daar slechts tot 1926, hetjaar dat hun enige zoon, Charles trouwde.  Ze bouwden een villa in Bentille en gingen op rust daar waar later het excellent—en thans spijtig genoeg gesloten—restaurant ''t Schuurtje' zou worden ondergebracht.

Na gedurende 22 jaar van zijn rust te hebben genoten overleed Karel Van Damme daar op 9 juli 1948.  Moeder bleef er nog enkele jaren maar ze bracht haar laatste levensjaren door in het Godshuis te Sint-Laureins waar ze op 1 juli 1956 zachtjes ontsliep.
