Beiske Niemeijer de stadsvroedvrouw, die de geboorte van Gerritje Steenblok in 1824 bij de burgerlijke stand aangaf, had sinds 1795 kraamvrouwen begeleid bij de bevalling. Op 35-jarige leeftijd had ze examen gedaan en kreeg ze de kwalificatie geadmitteerd vroedvrouw. Beiske was een geboren Groningse. In 1795 was ze 12 jaar gehuwd met schoenmaker Klaas Trox, een zoon van een Groningse sergeant. Ze had teon zelf inmiddels vier kinderen gebaard. Drie jaar later zou de vijfde en laatste nog komen. Beiske en Klaas woonden aan de Carolieweg, waar Beiske tot haar in 1838 bleef wonen. Klaas overleed in 1827 op 68-jarige leeftijd. Om niet bekende redenen was hij voor zijn overlijden niet meer beroepsmatig aktief, zodat Beiske vermoedelijk kostwinster was. De laatste jaren stond ze bekend als "vrouw Trox" of "de weduwe Trox". Ze heeft honderden Groningse kinderen ter wereld geholpen. Mede omdat ze sinds 1801 een functie als stadsvroedvrouw had, hielp ze bij veel bevallingen. Beiske ontvingb haar traktement uit de stadskas. In deze functie leidde ze tevens aspirant-vroedvrouwen op. Naast de functie van stadsvroedvrouw had Beiske Trox, evenals haar beroepsgenoten, een particuliere praktijk. In 1827 kreeg ze tevens de functie van lavementzetter voor de vrouwelijke armen. Beiske Trox-Niemeijer heeft in ieder geval nog tot in 1835-ze was toen inmiddels 75 jaar- gepraktiseerd. We weten dit uit geboorteaangiftes. Hoewel ze in 1838 nog als vroedvrouw in de almanak stond vermeld, kwam in haar overlijdensakte de vermelding "geen beroep"voor. Mogelijk heeft ze dus toch geen verloskundig werk meer verricht in de laatste paar jaar. Een 40-jarige praktijk-periode heeft ze wel volgemaakt.
