Jan was voor 1960 werkzaam bij de Maatschappij in de Wieringermeer omdat daar veel opgeknapt moest worden nadat de duitsers na het verleizen van de 2de wereld oorlog de Wieingermeerpolder onder water hadden gezet.
Rond 1956 ging hij bij de Hooghovens werken als metselaar/ovenbouwer in 3 ploegendoenst. Hij werkte tot de VUT bij de hoogovens en was dus op zijn 57 ste klaar met werken.
