Hendrikus H. was aanvankelijk bronsgieter. Hij leerde dit vak in Zweden. Hij is vermoedelijk de gieter van een uit één stuk gegoten bronzen beeld van St. Servasius bij de brug in Maasstricht. Aanvankelijk vervaardigde hij bij scheepswerf Piet Smit te Rotterdam fundaties vor stoommachines in schepen. Dit zware werk leverde hem diverse niet-operabele breuken op. Hij kocht een sigarenwinkel aan deZinkerweg in Rotterdam. Toen hij daar weg moest kocht hij twee pandjes aan de Prins Hendrikkade voor fl. 40.000,= in ± 1905.
