Onder de naam Jan van Braine was hij troubadour en schreef hij liederen. Hij was gehuwd met Adelheid van Mâcon, de gravin van Mâcon, met wie hij samen regeerde. Hij trok in 1234 naar het Heilig Land en stierf in 1239 zonder kinderen. Na zijn dood verkocht zijn weduwe Mâcon aan de Franse kroon.
