    Hij kreeg zijn bijnaam (Gasteblé) nadat hij tijdens zijn jeugd bij een jacht een graanveld had vernietigd. Dit moet dus een weinig voorkomende praktijk zijn geweest. Samen met zijn broer Peter I van Bretagne, bevocht hij de Engelsen onder meer bij de verdediging van Nantes, maar werd toch door hen gevangengenomen. Na de slag bij Bouvines werd hij vrijgelaten, in ruil voor de graaf van Salisbury Robert nam deel aan de kruistocht van de Albigenzen en belegerde Avignon. Na het overlijden van Lodewijk VIII van Frankrijk, was hij een der steunpilaren voor regentes Blanca van Castilië.
