Willem

Het oudste kind, Willem Smit, werd tussen juli en december 1942 vanuit Westerbork naar Auschwitz gedeporteerd. Hem overkwam wat ook vier andere Zaandamse mannen tussen 15 en 50 jaar oud meemaakten. De trein stopte bij Cosel, in Opper-Silezië, een selectiekamp voor dwangarbeid in een van de honderden werkkampen die rond de KZ’s lagen. De volwassen mannen werden gedwongen uit te stappen. Willem werd gedwongen om zich dood te werken. Hij bezweek vóór 31 maart 1944 in Midden-Europa, als laatste van het gezin, 22 jaar oud.
