Verzetsman Jan Hof herinnert zich dochter Elsie goed. “Wat was nou eigenlijk een jood? Als kind kende je alleen maar een voddenjood, en dat was iemand die zich door de stad lopend luidkeels aanbeval als koper van ouwe kleren. Dat was dus gewoon een eigennaam, net zoiets als bakker of melkboer. Elsie Smit, die gelijk met mij in 1935 voor het eerst op de ‘grote’ school kwam, was het dochtertje van een voddenjood die ook een uitdragerswinkel had, niet zo ver van ons huis.”
Hof probeerde er zijn moeder voetbalschoenen voor hem te laten kopen. Maar ze vond de aanschafprijs van 55 cent te hoog en Smit wilde zijn prijs niet laten zakken. “Een jodinnetje dus. Ik heb het jarenlang niet geweten, net zo min als dat haar broertjes, die ook op onze school zaten, jodenjongetjes waren. Daar kwam ik pas later achter. (…) Kort na de overgang naar de vijfde klas verliet ik de school (…) Elsie Smit heb ik nooit meer gezien.”

Geruime tijd na de oorlog vroeg Hof zich plotseling af hoe het Elsie Smit was vergaan. “Pittig en opgewekt, een spring-in-het-veldje, bewoog ze zich over het schoolplein, vaak proberend mij over te halen tikkertje met haar te spelen als ik met de jongens in de weer was.'
