      Wordt in 1962 in de gemeenteraad van Sittard gekozen voor de KVP. De KVP claimt met een meerderheid van één zetel de vier wethoudersposten. Hij heeft bezwaren tegen deze gang van zaken. Bij de verkiezingen van de wethouders binnen de gemeenteraad worden niet de vier naar voren geschoven wethouderskandidaten van de KVP gekozen. Er worden twee andere leden van de KVP gekozen, waaronder Charles, en twee wethouders van de Katholieke Democratische Partij. Dit leidt tot protesten binnen de KVP en in een cumulatie van druk vanuit de partij wordt het lidmaatschap van de partij opgezegd en na 18 dagen het wethouderschap neergelegd. Een en ander leidt uiteindelijk tot een procedure bij de Centrale Raad van beroep over wachtgelden, die wordt gewonnen. De uitspraak is dat onweerlegbaar is dat betrokkene wethouder is geweest en recht heeft op wachtgeld volgens de regels. Vervolgens wordt de gemeente Sittard mede aansprakelijk gesteld voor materiële en immateriële schade. Hierna wordt hij door de gemeenteraad van Sittard neergezet als een opportunist en nagewezen. Uiteindelijk gevolg is dat het gezin uitwijkt naar Arnhem.
