Notes about Willem Bernardus "Willem" Saaij

Willem Bernardus Saaij, zoon van Lauwerens Saaij en Gerarda van der Venne kiest het ruime sop op de grote vaart en later wordt hij sleepbootkapitein bij scheepswerf de Schelde in Vlissingen. Toen zijn ogen daarvoor te slecht werden kreeg hij een baantje als portier bij de scheepswerf. Hij trouwt met Geertruida van Vooren, dochter van Eduard Louis van Vooren en Sara Johanna van Reda. Onduidelijk is of hij zijn vrouw in Vlissingen of in Rotterdam heeft leren kennen. Vlissingen ligt voor de hand daar alle drie de kinderen daar zjin geboren. Geertruida heeft naar alle waarschijnlijkheid ook een tijdje als dienster in Schoonendijk gewerkt in een café aldaar. Pas op 31 oktober 1906 stapt het stel in het huwelijksbootje. Dat is een jaar na de geboorte van het jongste kind. Over Willen BernardusSaaij gaat het verhaal dat hij, toen hij een maatje jenever ging halen, in de sluis van Vlissingen aan boord van een schip stapte en pas weer maanden later terugkeerde.
Hij was werkzaam op de sleepboot 'Jacob' als kapitein/schipper en later, omdat zijn gezichtvermogen het varen niet meer toe liet, portier bij Koninklijke Maatschappij 'De Schelde'.
Zijn bijnaam was Opa Bobberje.
