    Schüler des Johanneums und Lehrling im Emil Güssefeldtschen Geschäft. Später versuchte er ebenfalls sein Glück in Südamerika, kehrte jedoch unbefriedigt zurück. Nach Hamburg zurückgekehrt etablierte er sich als Kornhändler.
    In 1868 verlobte er sich mit Helene Lührssen, einer Tochter aus angesehene Hamburger Familie. Noch in selben Jahr fand die Hochzeit statt. Sie wohnten in Harvestehude, Hallerstrasse und Eichenallee Ecke wo sie ein Schönes Haus zu eigen hatten.
    Krankheitshalber - Karl hatte im ähnliches Leiden wie sein Vater - und auch weil es sich schlecht rentierte, gab er sein Geschäft auf.
    Helene war eine große Tierfreundin und hatte als Mitglied des Tierschutzvereins in dieser Richtung viel gutes bewirbt.
    So gingen viele Jahren ruhig Glücks dahin, bis sich bei Karl ein ernstes Halsleiden einstellte. Er unterzog sich eine Operation aber ohne ausreichender Erfolg. Im Herbst 1900 verschlimmerte sich sein Zustand.
