Voordat oma naar het bejaardentehuis ging, dat nog in aanbouw/verbouw was, logeerde zij om beurten bij haar kinderen. In die tijd leerde ze mij, haar kleinkind André van Thijs en Bets Ottenhoff, het gedichtje:
Zon zon zon waar het je toch gezeten zeg
Wel veertien dagen bleef je weg
Achter de dikke wolken mijn kind
Ik werd verdreven door de wind

Van haar ontbijtbordje veegde zij de kruimels bij elkaar om op te eten. "Ook kruimeltjes zijn brood" was haar uitspraak. Duidelijk een gevolg van de hongerwinter 1944/1945.
