    liet zich 30 Juni 1794 als student inschrijven aan de groninger hoogeschool, promoveerde er 5 Juli 1799 op stellingen en werd 30 Juli d.a.v. toegelaten als advocaat bij het gerichte des Wold-Oldampts te Zuidbroek. Op 1 Aug. 1799 werd hij gecommitteerd tot lieutenant quartiermeester bij het bataillon artillerie der gewapende Burgerwacht in de departementen van de Eems, den Ouden IJssel en den Rhijn. Naar aanleiding van zijn praktijk bij het gerichte te Zuidbroek vestigde hij zich metterwoon in Veendam, waar hij zijn thuis had bij zijn grootmoeder. Op 19 Juni 1801 kreeg hij de aanstelling tot richter van Zuidwolde en Noordwolde en 19 Juli d.a.v. tot richter van Bedum c.a. Wegens de samenvoeging van onderscheidene jurisdictiën te lande vervielen de voornoemde betrekkingen en werd hij in 1803 aangesteld tot fiscaal in de jurisdictie van het Gorecht en Sappemeer. Ten gevolge der nieuwe organisatie der rechterlijke macht in 1811 verviel die post van fiscaal en vestigde hij zich te Groningen. In 1815 werd hij openbaar notaris in het arrondissement Groningen, in plaats van Mr. Reneke Gockinga, en lid van den raad te Groningen. In 1817 werd hij in den nederlandschen adel verheven. Gedurende 39 jaar oefende hij de rechtsgeleerde praktijk uit en 28 jaar was hij lid van den Gemeenteraad, waarvan 12 jaar tevens wethouder.
