Notes about Andrew Robert "Bud" Koorn

Bud woonde en werkte gedurende zijn jeugd op de boerderij van zijn vader. Toen hij 17 was, nam hij dienst bij de koopvaardij. Na een opleiding op Catalina Island, California ging hij varen op een vrachtschip. Deze schepen brachten militaire uitrusting over de Pacific Ocean naar de Marshall Islands, Saipan Guam e.d.
Omdat deze bestemmingen allemaal in oorlogsgebied lagen gingen er Mariniers mee om de kanonnen te bemannen die nodig waren om de schepen te beschermen tegen de Japanners. Na de oorlog brachten zij veel soldaten terug naar Amerika.
In 1946 nam hij een vrachtschip naar Zuid-Amerika. Later werkte hij op west coast tankers en olie en gas installaties.
In 1947 kwam hij terug naar Oak Harbor en ging werken bij een houtbedrijf.
In 1950 kreeg hij een oproep voor militaire dienst. Als hij een paar maanden ouder was geweest had hij niet hoeven opkomen maar nu moest hij twee jaar onder de wapenen. Zijn diensttijd bracht hij door in Amerika en Korea.
In 1954 ging hij werken bij Turner and Pease Butter Company tot hij na 32 jaar, in 1987, met pensioen ging.
