Mrs. Agnes Mathes Called in Death
Had Enjoyed Good Health
Until A Month Ago When
She Suffered A Stroke.

Mrs. Agnes Mathes, aged 88 years, died at her home in this city about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. She had enjoyed reasonably good health until about a month ago, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis.

She seemed to make a speedy recovery until yesterday shortly after dinner when she was again stricken. In the morning she was able to sit up and talk with relatives. The last stroke was so complete she never regained consiousness and passed peacefully away.

Her maiden name was Agnes Kuyper and she came to America from the Netherlands in 1849, where she was born, February 9, 1839. She came directly to Pella and this has been her home ever since.

She was married to Valentine Mathes and soon thre after moved onto the farm four miles north of Pella, which remained the family home until 22 years ago when she moved to town. To this union four daughters and one son were born, Mrs. P. Rykhoek, of Pella; Mrs. Henry Krumm, of Grinnell; Mrs. Henry Van Rheenen, of Reasnor; Miss Agnes Mathes, at home and John N. Mathes, residing north of Pella.

Mr. Mathes died in 1884 and during all those years she remained a widow. She was a splendid Christian woman and was dearly loved and admired by all who knew her. It was her happy privilege to be with her relatives at the annual Mathes family reunion about a month ago. It was then that she gave each of them a little souvenir. Little did she dream that her travels here on earth would soon be over. "God touched her with His finger, and she slept," wrote the poet. So may we say of this dear life - "God touched her with His finger, and she slept," but not until a beautiful life was lived, a noble example of patience, fidelity to truth and faith were given.

Funeral services will be held at the First Reformed church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of Rev. B. Mulder. Interment will be made in Graceland cemetery.
