Notes about Jan Helmes

Jan Helmes wordt geboren op 12 maart 1855. Hij staat geregistreerd onder geboorteacte nr. 10 van Doetinchem (Ambt). Zijn biologische vader is onbekend. De geboorte aangifte wordt door de vader (dan 71 jaar oud) van zijn moeder, Cornelia Catharina Helmes, gedaan. De getuigen zijn Wilhelmus Kaak (33 jaar) en Gradus Zwiekhorst (30 jaar). Cornelia is bij de geboorte van zoon Jan 20 jaar oud. Jan wordt op 13 juli 1861 door zijn moeder, die dan 26 jaar oud en naaister van beroep is, als wettig kind erkend. Cornelia verklaart dan 'geen schrijven te hebben geleerd'. Opmerkelijk is dat zowel in de geboorteakte als in de erkenningsakte niet de naam Cornelia maar Catharina wordt vermeld.

In 1874 wordt Jan ingeschreven in het register van Wehl. Daaropvolgend dient hij van 8 mei 1875 tot 7 mei 1880 bij de Nationale Militie (reserve krijgsmacht).
Na twee afkondigingen op 13 januari 1880 en 6 februari van dat jaar, wordt op 9 februari 1880 een acte van voorgenomen huwelijk met Maria Johanna Jansen opgesteld. Zij trouwen een jaar later op 10 februari 1881 in Ambt Doetinchem. Jan is dan 26 jaar oud en van beroep timmerman. Maria Johanna is dan 19 jaar en is naaister.

Op 4 januari 1907 vertrekt hij met zijn gezin van Oosseld naar de stad Doetinchem
Op 1 oktober 1907 verleent Jan Helmes erfdienstbaarheid van uitweg. Hij is dan kastelein.

Omstreeks 1923 trekt het paar naar Ooij, gemeente Zevenaar. 5 jaar later sterft Jan op 18 januari 1928. Van zijn dood is een bidprentje bekend.
Maria Johanna woont dan bij zoon Hendrik en zijn vrouw Elisabeth Holland in.
