Notes about Laurens "Louis" Helmes

Laurens Helmes is touwslager in Doetinchem.

Touwfabriek Helmes B.V. is opgericht in 1868 door de heer B. Grobben. In 1910 neemt Laurens Helmes de fabriek over en zet deze voort onder de naam L. Helmes v/h B. Grobben. In 1920 verhuist de fabriek naar de Dr.Huber Noodtstraat alwaar een nieuwe touwslagerij annex winkel werd gebouwd. In 1947 namen Alouis Helmes en broer Fons Helmes de zaken over van moeder Helmes en dochter Demia. In 1950 werd de eerste machine geïnstalleerd en werd er een zadelmakerij opgericht. In 1953 veranderde de naam in Firma L. Helmes, Touwslagerij en Groothandel. Onder die naam bleef men verder werken vooral op landbouwgebied en met alle soorten touwproducten. In 1962 werd de Naamloze Vennootschap opgericht. Het aantal personeelsleden was uitgebreid van 4 naar 30 in 1963.
Precies 100 jaar na de oprichting bouwde de familie een groot pand met kantoren plus een productieafdeling met opslagruimte aan de Plakhorstweg 7 op het Industrieterrein Keppelseweg.
In het nieuwe onderkomen bleef het bedrijf doorgroeien omdat het alert inspeelde op allerlei veranderingen in de markt, vooral de kunststof, het alternatief voor touw. Helmes kreeg te maken met touw in allerlei soorten, maten en kleuren. Begin jaren zeventig bereikte Helmes een commercieel hoogtepunt, de opdrachten stroomden binnen en het bedrijf groeide naar 45 werknemers. In de jaren 80 werden de successen minder. In deze moeilijke jaren was er te weinig oog voor de toenemende concurrentie op de wereldmarkt. De beperkte mogelijkheden om te investeren leidden ertoe dat in 1996 besloten werd de touwslagerij te verkopen aan de Wanders Holding Groep.
Helaas wordt na 152 jaar, op 15 juli 2020, de Touwfabriek Helmes-Wellink B.V. failliet verklaard. De touwfabriek was één van de oudste ondernemingen in de stad Doetinchem.
