Was dit Cornelis Adriaanse Cats, geboren circa 1560, burgermeester, gestorven 1625, broer van de beroemde schrijver Jacob Cats ?


Deze, geboren te Brouwershaven omstreeks 1560 en aldaar overleden 26 Juli 1625, was bestemd om de loopbaan van zijn geleerde oom te volgen en daarom te Dowaai, "toen de plaats om haast te zijn geleert", bij de Paters Jezuïeten ter school gezonden, maar "de quade tijt" deed hem naar zijn geboorteplaats terugkeren, waar hij later thesaurier (1589), schepen (sedert 1590) en burgemeester (o.a. in 1602, 1603, enz.) werd. Hij gaf de stoot aan Cats' bedijkingen in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.


Hij huwde


1°. Quirina Huijbrechts, dochter van Huijbrecht Leenaertsz, schepen en burgemeester van Brouwershaven, waar ze op 15 September 1603 overleed;


2°. (ondertrouwd te Zieriksee op 2 Mei 1604) Quirina Jan Leenderts Hollenboom, geboren te Haamstede, overleden te Brouwershaven op 21 Juli 1639, weduwe van Jacob Mogge. - Vgl. De Vos, t.a.p., blz. 59; De Vos, De vroedschap van Zierikzee, blz. 286; N.N.B.W., VI, kol. 279 (D.A. Felix).


- Neeltje Cornelisdr. Cadts, die met Jan Adriaense Thooft getrouwd was, uit welk huwelijk op 9 April 1626 een zoon Adriaen en op 12 December 1627 een dochter Adriaantje werd geboren, zal een dochter van Cornelis Cats zijn geweest, en eveneens Arjaantje Cornelis Cads, die in 1626 als doopgetuige optreedt (Doopboeken der Ned. Herv. kerk te Brouwershaven).


Een zoon van Cornelis, mr. Leonard Cats, werd omstreeks 1585 te Brouwershaven geboren, studeerde te Leiden (ingeschreven 25 Februari 1606), legde in 1614 de eed als advocaat af voor het Hof van Holland, trouwde in 1617 met Jacomina van Muylwijk uit Dordrecht, vestigde zich omstreeks die tijd in Middelburg en werd in 1625 benoemd tot lid van de Raad van Vlaanderen. Hij overleed te Middelburg in December 1639. Zijn enig zoontje Cornelis, te Middelburg gedoopt op 14 December 1625, waarbij Jacob Cats en Helena Luyck getuigen waren, was reeds in 1638 overleden.
