Dochter Metje vertelt in een brief van 6 sept. 1987 hoe haar vader en moeder bij elkaar gekomen zijn:
"..Moeder was wees vanaf haar vijfde jaar. Ze is bij familie grootgebracht. Toen ze ouder werd, wilde ze verpleegster worden. Vader kwam en wilde met haar trouwen. Nee Hendrik, zei ze, dat kan niet want ik wil verpleegster worden. Na verloop van tijd kwam hij terug, maar ze zei: Nee Hendrik, je moet maar niet terugkomen, want ik wil immers verpleegster worden.
Daarna kwam steeds deze woorden in haar op: “en uw kinderen zullen van de Heere geleerd zijn, en de vrede van uw kinderen zal groot zijn”.
Dat is niet voor mij dacht ze. Maar steeds hoorde ze weer; “uw kinderen zullen van de Heere geleerd zijn en de vrede van uw kinderen zal groot zijn”.
Dat kwam steeds weer, tot ze zei: Heere, als het van U is, zal ik, als Hendrik terugkomt geloven dat hij door U gezonden is.
Hendrik kwam terug en zei: “ik kan niet anders zien dan dat jij de vrouw bent die God mij gegeven heeft.”
Dan is het goed, zei ze"
